1 Its all about Matter LI: What is matter?
SC: Understand the particle nature of matter. Explain the difference between the three states.

2 What is Matter? Everything around you is made up of matter.
Objects that take up space and have mass are called matter. Matter is grouped into states which have the same properties. All the material on earth is in three states-solid, liquid, and gas. Chocolate cake is made up of matter. You are made of matter. Properties describe matter. A block of wood, milk, and air all have properties.

3 Solids A solid has a certain fixed size and shape which means it takes up space. You change the shape of wood by sawing it in half or burning it.

4 Liquids Liquid matter has a fixed volume which means it takes up space. Liquids don't have a fixed shape. They take the shape of their container. Liquids can flow, be poured, and spilled. Did you notice how the liquid goes everywhere The liquid is taking the shape of the floor and the floor is expansive limitless boundary (until it hits the wall). You can't spill a wooden block. You can drop it and it still has the same shape. You can spread peanut butter on bread, but peanut butter does not flow. It is not a liquid at room temperature. You have to heat peanut butter up to make it a liquid. When you or your mom makes jello, it is first a liquid. You have to put it in the refrigerator so that it becomes a solid. These are yummy forms of matter with properties of a liquid and a solid.

5 Gases Gas is matter that has no fixed shape or size.
They take the shape of their container. Gases are all around you. You can feel gas when the wind blows. Feel when a lorry passes on your bike

6 States of Matter Fixed Shape

7 Particle theory Matter is made up of tiny particles (Atoms & Molecules) Particles are in constant motion. Particles of Matter are held together by strong forces Heat (energy) affects the movement of the particles.  The higher the temperature, the faster the speed of the particles. Solid and liquid same number of particles, gas has lost some Space between the particles Crush bottle demo and explain heat particles away, pressure crushes Expt meths and water mixing small particles fill up space

8 States of Matter Shape volume particles Solid Fixed Vibrating Liquid
