Si impersonale Si + third person singular of the verb expresses an unspecified collective subject, corresponding in English to one (you, we, they, people). This construction is often used to express general rules, habits, and customs. Si is used with third-person plural form when followed by a plural noun.

Si impersonale L’esempio Si studia bene in biblioteca.
One can study well in the library. 2. Si usano le spezie per cucinare bene. You use spices to cook well.

Si impersonale In compound tenses, the si impersonale construction is conjugated with essere. The past participle agrees in gender and number with the object. Si sono mangiati troppi tortellini ieri. They ate too many tortellini yesterday.

L’esempio Si è preparata una buona cena per gli amici.
We prepared a nice dinner for friends. Si è mangiato bene in quella trattoria. One ate well in that trattoria

Si impersonale When people are rich, they aren’t always happy.
An adjective that follows the verb essere in the si impersonale is in the masculine plural form. The verb is singular. L’esempio Quando si è ricchi, non si è sempre contenti. When people are rich, they aren’t always happy.

Si impersonale Object Pronouns precede si. L’esempio
Marco è contento. Lo si vede dalla faccia. Marco is happy. You can see it from his face. 2. Ma è Sofia Loren!! La si ricononosce subito. But it’s Sofia Loren. One recognizes her immediately.

Si impersonale Object pronouns precede si. The only exception is ne, which follows si. L’esempio 1. Se ne parla sempre. One is always talking about it. 2. Secondo me, di gelati buoni non se ne mangiano mai troppi. If you ask me, one can never eat too much good ice cream.
