A cause is what makes something happen An effect is what happens as a result of a cause Example: Cause: Parvana’s dad goes to jail. Effect: Parvana has to work to make money for her family. Other examples of cause and effect in The Breadwinner?

4 Unfamiliar Words Use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words
Look for clues to a word’s meaning not only in the sentence in which it appears but also in surrounding sentences Ex: On tough days I can be a little pessimistic.

5 Spelling: Greek Word Parts
Many English words have Greek word parts These Greek word parts can provide clues about the meaning of a word Example: hydro (means water) Hydrogen An element used in water

6 Subject and Object Pronouns
Subject pronouns: used as the subject of a sentence I, you, he, she, it, we, they Ex: She drives too quickly. Object pronouns: used as a direct object, indirect object, or the object of a preposition Me, you, him, her, it, us, them

7 Subject and Object Pronoun Practice
(I, Me) am fascinated by how fast cheetahs run. Bill and (me, I) studied the habitat of the penguin. Mr. Douglas taught me and (her, she) about Arctic explorers. I helped Sarah and (they, them) with the science project. David and (she, her) have always wanted to visit Alaska.
