2 Objective: Know the Proper terms to use when talking about horses.
Be able to recognize some of the different color patterns of horses.

4 Horse A large non cloven hoofed mammal (Equus caballus)
short-haired coat long mane and tail domesticated since ancient times Ruminant or monogastric? Monogastric w/ specialized cecum

5 Horse Caballo Ka bye o in spanish Cavallo is in Italian

6 Equine Of or relating to a horse

7 Equus a genus of mammals, including the horse, ass, etc.
Some have said equus goes way back to indicating that horses are our equal???????

8 Pony Any of several types or breeds of horses that are small in size when full grown. A small horse under 14.2 hands

9 Light Horse Most horses, riding size. Above 14.2 hands 800 – 1200 lbs.

10 Draft Horse Work horses Above 14.2 hands 1100 – 2500 lbs

11 Miniature Horse A height breed <= 34”
Replica of larger breed ex. Qtr Horse or Arabian. Not dwarves or runts. Selectively bred down in size with specific conformation

12 Hand Why does it exist? From ground to highest point of the withers.

Castrate: aka geld, spay, neuter, fix …. is any action by which a male loses function of the testes Why Castrate? Reduce unwanted animals Make more docile.

19 Filly Young female horse

20 Colt Young male horse

21 Yearling >= 1 yr old and < 2 years old

22 2 year old >= 2 yrs old and < 3 years old

23 Horse Colors Students will complete the genetics of color handout after quick look at colors.
