JML Course Selection Timeline
Teacher Recommendations: Teacher recommendations were loaded into Phoenix on January 11th If the teacher recommended a level change you would have been contacted directly. To view your child's teacher recommendations log into ParentVUE and click on the Course Request tab. *You must use desktop to view course requests. You will not be able to view it on your phone.

Rising 7th Grade Timeline
*Mrs. Calderone will meet with students during Keyboarding and Art classes February 5-9 to complete course requests. * Students will select electives at that time. Core Class (Math, English, Science and History) recommendations will be pre loaded into StudentVUE. *Parents will have until February 23, 2018 to view and make changes to students electives via Student/ParentVUE. Instructions on how to make changes will be sent via . *If you would like to discuss a level change to a Core Course please contact Mrs. Calderone directly as you will not be able to make the changes directly in Student/ParentVUE.

7th Grade Required Courses:
Grade Level or Honors in the following: English Life Science U.S. History Math: Students currently in Math 6 will go to Math 7. Students currently in Accelerated Math 6/7 will go to Math 7 or Algebra 1. Also Required: Health and P.E. Technology Education & Family and Consumer Science (one semester of each) All 7th graders will have 45 minutes of Resource or Spectrum

7th Grade Elective Courses
All 7th Graders will choose ONE Fine Arts Elective: Band 7 (must be currently enrolled in Band 6) Strings 7 (must be currently enrolled in Strings 6) Chorus Guitar 7 Art 7 All 7th Graders will choose ONE Language Elective: Communication Studies Coding At the Middle School Spanish 1, German 1, Latin 1, French I-(high school credit) *Support classes may be recommended on an individual basis

*Core Classes (Math, English, Science and History) recommendations a were preloaded into StudentVUE on January 11th. *Students choose elective courses through Tech Ed on January 16th and 17th (1st semester) and on February 6th and 7th (2nd semester). *Parents will have until February 23rd, 2018 to view and make changes to students electives via Student/ParentVUE. Instructions on how to make changes will be sent via . *If you would like to discuss a level change to a Core Course please contact Ms. Simpson directly as you will not be able to make the changes directly in Student/ParentVUE.

Required Courses-Grade 8
Grade Level or Honors for the following: English Civics- Government/Economics Physical Science-Physics/Chemistry Math: Students who took Math 7 will go to Algebra 1 Students who took Algebra 1 will go to Geometry Students who took Geometry will go to Alg 2 w/Trig Health and PE 8 *Resource-all 8th graders are required to have a 90 minute Resource block every other day. **Students who take Spectrum will have 45 minutes of Resource and 45 minutes of Spectrum

Grade 8 World Language World Languages and Cultures Level I or II in: Spanish, German, Latin or French All world languages are high school credit bearing courses and the final grade will be factored into the student’s high school GPA.

Grade 8 Elective Choices
Students who are not taking a World Language will choose TWO of the following: Band 8 (if currently enrolled in Band 7) Strings 8 (if currently enrolled in Strings 7) Chorus Guitar Level 2 (if currently enrolled in Guitar 7) Communications (if did not take in 7th) Technology Education Family and Consumer Sciences Art 8 3D Art 8 Robotics (high school credit bearing course) Coding (If not taken in seventh grade) Students who are taking a World Language will choose ONE of these electives

TJ, AET, AOS Timeline-8th grade year
The process to apply to all of these schools begins in the Fall of 8th grade. For information regarding Open House dates, please go to school websites to get details. There are no prep classes or materials available to prepare students for entry exams. Students must be enrolled in Algebra 1 or higher during their 8th grade year in order to apply to TJ and AOS. They must be in Geometry in 8th grade to apply to AET.

Expunging Grades Any high school course taken during middle school.
Once expunged, the grade AND credit are gone. Students would need to retake the course in order to receive credit or to move onto subsequent levels. Expunge forms will be sent home with all Rising 8th and 9th grade FINAL report cards. Forms MUST be submitted to the Counseling Departments NO LATER than August 15, 2018: Rising 9th Graders: Submit forms to FHS Rising 8th Graders: Submit forms to JML (Ms. Simpson or Ms. Melko)

College & Career Readiness in 7th!
What JML students are doing with Family Connection: Enrichment Programs Exploration- 6th-7th grade Take and Complete Cluster Finder-6th Grade Career Cluster information is used for our big event: Day at Work in April Road Trip Nation Exploration-7th Grade -Students view interviews of various professionals/course planning and course selection Six Year Plans Admissions representative from Northern Virginia Community College will speak to 7th grade students regarding college admissions process. (not NOVA specific) STEAM Day for 7th graders March 9th.

What JML students are doing with Family Connection: College Knowledge- 8th grade Identify key concepts related to college Complete initial college search Interest & college exploration College Trip!

Summer Options Some students decide to take a math course in the summer to accelerate their course work. -Typical Courses offered are Algebra 1 and Geometry. -Registration opens April 20th. -Typical cost approximately $700
