Agroforestry and “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” (Make Every Compound Green)-Bihar Initiatives
After bifurcation of State in 2000, Bihar has 6845 sq. km. forest land which is barely 7.27% of its geographical area sq. km.
To overcome the land crunch problem in extending the forest cover innovative incentivized agroforestry scheme and “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” have been launched and are being implemented.
Under agroforestry scheme requirement of plants are met by an other innovative scheme of Mukhya Mantri Kisan Nursery is being implemented in which nurseries are raised by farmers on their private land which are bought back by Govt. and distributed to farmers free of cost for plantation on their private lands.
Under “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” scheme plantation is done on space available in institutional premises(Govt./Private).

Estimated sequestration of Co2 by trees planted in Agroforestry & “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” schemes
Trees planted by the year have become 2 year+ old.
There are many odds before the farmers still the survival in agroforestry has been around 35% . However under “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” the survival is around 75%. As such trees are available by the year
According to an study 2.5 year old trees of Acacia spps sequester 21.5 lbs Co2 per annum. Thus the trees planted under said schemes are sequestering *21.5 lbs or tonnes of Co2 annually.
