1 Complete the Venn Diagram comparing the Nervous and Endocrine systems.
HW: Study! Nervous/Endocrine Test Monday. *Index cards = +2pts!* Do Now: /27/17 1. Take out your HW Complete the Venn Diagram comparing the Nervous and Endocrine systems. Be sure to include 3 examples in each section.

2 Nervous System Endocrine System
Fast response (reaction time) Uses impulses to send messages Organs are Brain, spinal cord, and nerves Uses Neurons CNS/PNS Both react to stimuli Both help maintain homeostasis Both are systems of the body that send messages Hypothalamus is a link between the two systems Slower response (reaction time) Uses hormones to send messages Organs are called “glands” Travels through the bloodstream Hormones: ex: adrenaline, thyroxine, HGH, insulin, testosterone

3 Concept Map

4 HW Answers Autistic people have difficulty communicating and socializing. Research has shown no reported brain activity in mirror neuron brain area. By being able to predict possible outcomes, locate and determine possible barriers and help with understanding. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Empathy improves your social skills understanding how others feel, and helps you to communicate in ways that make sense to others.

5 Nervous and Endocrine Systems Review Packet

6 Neurons Review Muscle Nucleus

10 4. Describe how 3 types of neurons work together
If you touch the tip of a needle on a cactus, the SENSORY NEURONS in your skin will send the message of “pain” to your INTERNEURONS in your spinal cord and brain that processes the message of “pain”. They send the message to take your hand off the cactus to the MOTOR NEURONS and they stimulate the muscle in your hand to move off the needle of the plant.

11 Cerebrum Voluntary Tasks: Thinking, speaking, etc. Cerebellum Balance/Coordination Walk, sports, bicycle, etc Medulla Involuntary Tasks: Heart rate, breathing, etc. Spinal Cord Bundle of nerves that carry messages to and from the brain

12 Pituitary (Master Gland)
Thyroid Parathyroid Thymus Adrenal Pancreas Testes

13 Pituitary HGH: Growth Thyroid Thyroxin: Metabolism, calcium/phosphorus Parathyroid Parathyroid: helps thyroid gland Thymus Thymosin: Immune System Support Adrenal Adrenaline: “Fight or Flight” response Pancreas Insulin/Glucagon: Sugar levels Testes Testosterone: Sex Characteristics

14 When you watch a scary movie, you may feel your heart racing, sweating, breathing getting heavier etc. These responses are all caused by the HORMONE named ADRENALINE. ADRENALINE is produced by the ADRENAL GLANDS which sit on top of your kidneys. This response is called “Fight or Flight”. *response to a threat: strength or speed*

15 The nervous system maintains homeostasis in your body because it constantly processes information (stimuli) and responds to those changes in the environment accordingly. Your nervous system tries to keep you from harm or hurting yourself. It also coordinates with the Endocrine system, since both systems send messages.
