1 What you need to know about the DAT

2 Before you actually take the exam...
First thing you need to do is register for a DENTPIN "The DENTPIN® (DENTal Personal Identifier Number) is a unique personal identifier for professionals and students involved with the U.S. dental education system and standardized testing programs.“ You need it before you can take the test It can take some time, so create one early! Type "DENTPIN" into google and clink on the ADA website link to learn how to have one created

3 Applying to take the exam
Once you have a DENTPIN, you can apply for the exam! On the same website you registered for the DENTPIN, click on the “Apply to test” tab (it’s right below the DENTPIN tab) It will take you to your login, and then follow the steps from there The ADA website has amazing resources, as well, that can help answer any questions you have about the test (Go to and see how to apply, test prep, info about the Prometric testing centers, etc.) Keep in mind this does cost $445 so schedule it far enough in advance that you will have time to prepare for the test… you don’t want to pay this again unless you really need to

4 Prometric testing centers are strict
Do your research about what you need to bring to the testing center!! They are very strict about exactly what you can bring so have it all ready to go the night before (You’re already nervous about the test, so don’t add to that stress by being sent home because you didn’t have what you needed) C:\Users\citri\Desktop\Pre-dental Club\DAT\dat_examinee_guide Copy.pdf This PDF file is also on the ADA website and goes over all of the rules, fees, times, etc for the exam.

13 What to expect during the exam (5hours 15min)
Survey of Natural sciences (90min for 100 questions) You have 54sec/question!! Biology (40%) General Chemistry (30%) Organic Chemistry (30%) Perceptual Ability (PAT) (60min for 90questions) Reading Comprehension (60 min for 50 questions) Quantitative reasoning (45min for 40 questions)

14 Biology (40questions) Cell and molecular biology Diversity of life
Structure and function of systems Developmental biology Genetics Evolution, ecology, and behavior Page five through six in the DAT guide from ADA’s website goes into the breakdown for each of these!

15 Practice questions!

16 1. All of the following are secondary messengers used in signal transduction EXCEPT one. Which is the exception? cAMP DAG IP3 Ca2+ Epinephrine

17 Epinephrine is a hormone and is a first messenger
Answer is E Epinephrine is a hormone and is a first messenger They others are involved in cell signaling

18 2. Which of the following factors supports the structure of beta-pleated sheets in proteins?
Disulfide bonds Hydrogen bonding Hydrophobic effect Ionic bonding Covalent bonding

19 Hydrogen bonds of the backbone form secondary protein structure
Answer is B Covalent bonding will occur when forming the primary structure of a peptide chain Hydrogen bonds of the backbone form secondary protein structure Ionic bonding and disulfide bonds don’t occur until tertiary and quaternary protein folding

20 3. The energy source for chemoautotrophs come from…?
The sun H2O ATP Organic molecules Inorganic molecules

21 Answer is E Chemo- use energy from inorganic or organic molecules -auto- create their own energy * These organisms can fix carbon for form organic compounds but they aren’t used for energy

22 4. A sample of DNA consists of 32% of cytosine and guanine combinded
4. A sample of DNA consists of 32% of cytosine and guanine combinded. Which of the following is correct for this sample of DNA? Uracil=34% Thymine=68% Adenine=32% Adenine=34% Thymine=32%

23 G+C=32% 100%-32%=68%=A+T 68%/2=34%=A
Answer is D G+C=32% 100%-32%=68%=A+T 68%/2=34%=A

24 General Chemistry (30 questions)
Stoichiometry and general concepts Chemical kinectics Redox Gases Atomic and molecular structure Liquids and Solids Solutions Periodic properties Acids and Bases Nuclear reactions Chemical Equilbria Lab work Thermochem

25 General Chemistry In which instance is a gas most likely to behave ideally? At high temperatures, because the molecules will always be far apart. At high pressures, because the molecules will be close to each other relative to the size of the molecules. When molecules are nonpolar, because the molecules are more likely to interact. At high temperatures and low pressures, because the molecules are far apart and not likely to interact. At low temperatures, because the molecules are les likely to collide with each other.

26 Answer is D Gases are “more” ideal as pressure decreases and temperature increases because ideal gas molecules do not have intermolecular forces and all collisions are elastic.

27 2. Which section of the graph does a solid exist only?
B C D E

28 Answer is A A is the only section a solid would exist because it begins melting as temperature is increased

29 Organic Chemistry (30 questions)
Mechanisms Chemical and physical properties of molecules Stereochemistry Nomenclature Reactions of major functional groups Acid-base Aromatics and Bonding

30 Organic Chemistry… Everyone's favorite!
Elimination of Br with NaOCH3 from which of the following compounds will give (Z)-3-methyl-2-pentene as the major product? A C E. B D.

31 Answer is C First think about what (Z)-3-methyl-2-pentene looks like…
Then, which compound would give us that product via an elimination??

32 2. Rank the following aromatic compounds in order of reactivity towards electrophilic aromatic substitution (from most reactive to least reactive): A. 3>4>2>5>1 B. 3>5>2>4>1 C. 4>3>5>2>1 D. 1>5>4>2>3 E. 1>5>2>4>3

33 Answer is A Remember the more activating and more deactivating groups… NH3 is the most activating NO3 is the most deactivating

34

35 40 seconds a question but strategize Breakdown (15 questions each)
PAT (90 questions, 60min) 40 seconds a question but strategize Breakdown (15 questions each) Keyholes Top/front/end Angle ranking Hole punch Cube counting Pattern folding

36 Keyhole practice problem

37 Answer is E

38 TFE

39 Answer is B

40 Angel Ranking

41 I look at the inside end of the angle
Answer is D Mostly guessing… I look at the inside end of the angle

42 Hole Punch

43 Answer is B

44 Cube Counting 7 cubes 8 cubes 9 cubes 10 cubes 11 cubes

45 Answer is B Imagine pouring a can of paint over the top

46 Pattern folding

47 Find references for yourself
Answer is C Find references for yourself If it is hard to visualize, print them and cut them out to fold them

48 Break You will get a 30 min optional break at this time before continuing so bring some snacks

49 Reading comp (50 questions, 60min)
There are 3 passages that you will need to read and answer questions on

50 Quantitative reasoning (40 questions, 45min)
1min 8 seconds a questions Mathematical problems Statistics Word problems Practice online tests using this calculator so you are used to it Try not to rely too heavily on the calculator… you will lose precious time

51 Based on correct answers
How is the test scored?? Based on correct answers The results aren’t raw scores or percentiles… they are scale scores It is scaled from 1-30 using “equating procedures” Average is 18 for people taking this exam and closer to 19/20 for those getting into dental school No penalty for guessing! Takes almost a month for the scores to be transferred to the AADSAS application site and if you don’t see it after that time, call AADSAS and they will help!

52 What if you need to take it again…?
You must wait 90 days before you can retake the exam Give yourself time before applications are due

53 Questions??
