Tests for Organic Compounds

Simple chemical tests with substances called indicators can be conducted to determine the presence of different organic compounds. A color change of an indicator is usually a positive test for the presence of an organic compound. Benedict’s Solution Biuret’s Solution

SIMPLE Carbohydrate Test – Benedict’s Solution
Add to samples and heat. If sugar is present the color will change from blue to red. The closer to red, the HIGHER the amount of sugar.

COMPLEX Carbohydrate Test – Iodine
Add to samples. If starch is present the color will change from orange-brown to purple-black Potato - POSITIVE Apple - NEGATIVE

Protein Test – Biuret’s Solution
Add to samples. If protein is present the color will change from deep blue to lilac purple

Lipid Test – Brown Paper Bag
Add sample to brown paper bag. If lipid is present it will leave a greasy smudge on the brown paper bag
