1 Do Now: Sentence Combining
Change each set of sentences into one sentence each: Sophomores take English. They study world cultures. The study of grammar remains a critical skill. It is a lost art.

3 Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional phrases act as adjectives and adverbs, and tell you How: Fred is sore from his long football practice. When: I will see Tim on Wednesday. Where: The book is on the counter. Which one: The wall with puzzle pieces is cool.

4 Appositives: rename or describe a noun
Usually in commas before or after a noun: The novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, was summer reading. The fat cat, Tito, was licking its lips.

5 Appositive Phrases: longer appositives
A state known for its cold climate, Alaska is closer to the North Pole than Texas. Martin Luther King, Jr., a famous civil rights leader, is often quoted.

6 Paired Response Which phrase is the highlighted section?

7 Review work Combine at least two of your sentences from your identity essay, using either prepositional or appositive phrases.

8 Essay Review In your essay, find the sentences that explain what culture you belong to. Is it Ethnic? Racial? Other?
