God’s will Satan’s will

3 Lesson 1B: The Home in the Beginning
The Family & the Home Lesson 1B: The Home in the Beginning

4 The Home in “The Beginning” (review)
The home in “the beginning” was a… Divine necessity, not a chance accident (Gen. 2:18-20; see also 1 Cor. 11:8-9; 1 Tim. 2:13) Divine miracle, not an evolution of naturalistic processes (Gen. 2:21- 22; see also Gen. 1:26-28; 2:7 and 1 Cor. 11:7) Divine institution, not a man-made arrangement (Gen. 2:23-25; see Mal. 2:14-16 and Mt. 19:4-8)

5 House and Home any difference?
What is a house? What is a home? House and home can be used to refer to the dwelling of a family (Mt. 7:24; etc.) House and home can be used to refer to the family itself (Mt. 10:6; Lk. 10:5; Acts 20:20) Acts 20:20 20  how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, Luke 10:5 5  But whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house.' Matthew 7:24 24  "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: Matthew 10:6 6  But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

6 Why Study the Family & the Home?
The home is important… A place to teach God’s word (Gen. 18:19) A place to train children (Eph. 6:1-4) A place to provide love (Tit. 2:4-5) Ephesians 6:1-4 1  Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2  "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3  "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth." 4  And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Titus 2:4-5 4  that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5  to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Genesis 18:19 19  For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him."

7 God’s Marriage Manual God knows what is best for mankind because he…
Created mankind (Gen. 1:26-28) Expressed his authority (will / word) to mankind (Gen. 2:15- 17) Demonstrated his wisdom to mankind (Gen. 2:18-24) Genesis 2:  Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17  but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

8 Genesis 2:18-25 Permanent Pure Homo sapiens Heterosexual Monogamous
18  And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 19  Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name  So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place  Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man  And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh  And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Homo sapiens Heterosexual Monogamous Permanent Pure

9 Genesis 2:18-25 God’s Plan Man’s Plan 1. Homo sapien
Bestiality (Lev. 18:23) 2. Heterosexual Homosexual (Lev. 18:22; Rom. 1:24-26) 3. Monogamous Polygamy (Deut. 17:17; Cor. 7:2) 4. Permanent Divorce (Mal. 2:16; Mt. 19:3-9) 5. Pure Adultery (Ex. 20: 14; Heb. 13:4)

10 Matthew 19:3-9 Answer Rebuttal
3  The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?" 4  And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' 5  and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." 7  They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" 8  He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9  And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." Test Question Answer Rebuttal

11 God’s Marriage Law from “the Beginning”
Patriarchal Mosaic Christian Genesis 2:18-25 * * * Marriage is permanent Deut. 24:1-4 Mal. 2:14-16 Mt. 5:31-32 Mt. 19:3-9 Mk. 10:1-12 Lk. 16:18 Rom. 7:2-3 1 Cor. 7:10-11, 39

12 Genesis 2:24 in the NT Moses: Pattern (Gen. 2) Jesus: Permanent
(Mt. 19) Paul: Purity (1 Cor. 6) Paul: Peaceful (Eph. 5) 23  And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." 15  Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16  Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For "the two," He says, "shall become one flesh." 17  But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 28  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29  For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30  For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31  "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

13 God’s Marriage Design in Genesis 2:18-25
Its companionship: help meet (help of his like, suitable, comparable), man (husband), wife Its constituents: monogamy, heterosexual, homosapien Its commitments: leave (severance), cleave (permanence), one flesh (acceptance), not ashamed (innocence)

14 1 Corinthians 7:1-5 1  Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2  Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3  Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4  The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5  Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

15 Review Questions 1. Why is the home important? 2. What five things do we learn about marriage from Genesis 2:18-25? 3. What do we know about marriage from all three dispensations? 4. How is Genesis 2:24 used in the NT by Jesus and Paul?
