1 Multiplying by FOIL When having to multiply two binomials together, we need to have a method in place to properly multiply the terms together. This method is called FOIL.

2 FOIL – First, Outside, Inside, Last
When multiplying two binomials together, we need to use the FOIL method to complete the work. Let’s look at multiplying two binomials (x + 5)(x – 3) following the “First, Outside, Inside, Last” method to multiply. FIRST (x + )(x - ) = x We multiplied the first terms in each parenthesis together. OUTSIDE (x + )( - 3) = -3x We multiplied the outer most terms in each parenthesis. INSIDE ( + 5)(x - ) = 5x We multiplied the inner LAST ( + 5)( - 3) = We multiplied the last Putting each piece back together we have: x2 – 3x + 5x – 15 = x2 + 2x - 15
