What physical features supported settlement?
The Nile River, of course. The kingdom of Kush was located further south than Egypt. It was further into the center of Africa. Cataracts helped protect from invasion.

Egypt takes over Egypt can see that Kush is getting bigger and stronger. Kush has better resources (iron ore) Egypt decides they will take over before Kush gets too big. Egypt controls Kush for 450 years. During this time the Egyptian culture bleeds in. Kushites adopt some of the Egyptian customs.

Kush Kicks Out Egypt. How do they kick them out of their space?
In 850BC Kush is strong again. Egypt keeps getting attacked by others because they have weak pharaohs. Kashta (Kush king) attacked Egypt in 751 BC. CONTROL!! Kush now controls from Mediterranean Sea where the Nile splits.

25th Dynasty Why is this important? First Kush dynasty.
But they are pushed out of Egypt by the Assyrians from Mesopotamia in 670 BC.

Economy Iron Ore Trade Network
They could trade with lots of neiboring kingdoms. They became a rich and powerful kingdom again. A system of people in different lands who trade goods back and forth. Exports-good sent out Gold, pottery, iron tools, slaves, ivory, elephants, ostrich feathers, leopard skins. Imports-goods brought in Jewelry, luxury items.

Reasons for the COLLAPSE of Kush
Internal External Loss of Resources Farmers allowed their cattle to overgraze the land Count not produce enough food for people Ironmakers used up the forests so wood became scarce; no heat. No more trade and weapons New trade routers went around Kush Aksum became a powerful region. Took over kingdom of Kush. Made people become Christian Kush culture disappeared
