CVE-1000 Intro to Civil Engineering & Construction Topic: BS in Construction Management Prof. Ralph V. Locurcio, PE
2
Why we are “civil” engineers!!
We build “civility” into daily life Water & Sanitary systems - keep us healthy Housing – keeps us warm & safe Transportation systems – help us travel Factories – build the stuff we need & want Office buildings – give us a place to work Schools – a place to prepare our children Energy systems – keep it all running

History of Construction
Oldest profession – create shelter Master builders Learned by experience 90% Cost of project = construction Increasing complexity Concern for environment, energy, etc. Rise of Construction Management
7
Prehistoric construction 4000BC
8
Public Construction 2500BC
9
World’s great buildings
10
Future of Construction
11
About Construction… It’s an extremely complex process…
Many players, many variables, many unknowns Design is never perfect Like manufacturing… but… Not in factory and teams are variable Production site is crude & unprepared Very large projects – rarely build more than one Very large risks – $$$$$ + owner’s only experience Large penalties for error or contract failure Money drives all aspects of the process One chance to get it right Goal is to deliver a perfect product
12
Engineering vs. Construction
1/2/2019
13
We Train The Quarterbacks
14
Construction Manager (CM)…
CM = QB of construction team Develops all plans & makes key decisions Oversees construction operations Makes changes when needed Monitors schedule & costs Provides interface with clients Submits progress payments & claims Responsible for quality control Ensures all work is completed Delivers project to client (scores a goal)
15
CMs Call The Plays
16
Building a Project The 4 phases of project development
Planning & Programming Design & Engineering Construction (Manufacturing) Maintenance

18
Construction vs. Engineering
Construction Engineering Mostly outdoor 1. Mostly Indoor Teamwork 2. Individual work Business skills 3. Technical skills Multi-skills 4. Specialized skills Variable locations 5. Fixed location Team Leadership 6. Self-discipline Total project 7. One component Large budget 8. Small budget Greater risk 9. Smaller risk End product 10. Partial product
19
Construction skills… Skills you need in construction
Fundamentals: science, math, business Contracting: risk, legal issues, changes Project Controls: schedule, cost, estimates Construction Operations: planning, purchasing, construction documents, productivity, quality, documentation, safety, logistics, closeout Leadership: teams, organization, motivation, success, ethics
20
Simple example Construction of a Fido’s house
What needs to be considered ???
21
Phase 1 - Programming What type of dog is Fido? How big is he or she?
What’s the local climate? Where will you put the house? How much room do you have? What style of dog house do you want? Are there special functions or needs?
22
What style does the Fido want…
Police? Latino? Family? Italiano? Modern? Country? Special Exterior? Interior?
23
Phase 2 - Engineering
24
Plans & Specifications…
Plans Details Specifications
25
Phase 3 - Construction
26
Construction phase Planning Tools Const Purchase& Deliver Opns
Cost Timing Quality Safety Labor Weather Siting Transportation Tape measure Hammer Square Circular saw Table saw (optional) Paintbrush Dust mask Goggles Hearing Protection 4'x8' sheet of 5/8" exterior siding 1— 8' 2x4 (to be cut into 2x2's) 1— 10' 2x4, rated for outdoor use Nails—16d for base, 8d for house, and short roofing nails if using shingles Shingles (optional) Finishing material (paint or nontoxic wood preservative) Planning Tools Permits Schedule Organize Budget Hire workers Equipment Inspection Safety Const Opns Purchase& Deliver Materials
27
Phase 4 - Maintenance
28
Satisfy customer’s needs!

Construction Process Work Breakdown & Flow Design Budget & Schedule
Estimate Construction Cost Construction Schedule Quality Control Plan Supervise Construction Operations Make all Payments
33
Planning…work breakdown
34
Time Phased Budget
35
Construction Schedule…
36
Cost Estimates… Study the plans & contract terms
Decide on materials & methods Determine take off quantities Calculate the cost of each quantity Add overhead & profit Negotiate with the contractor

Construction Operations
42
What’s involved… build a column
Engineering: examine the site calculate the loads design the columns size the rebars specify the materials draw the plan write the contract answer RFIs advise the owner get paid for work Construction: read the plans hire the workers organize the site schedule the work form the columns install the rebars purchase the materials place the concrete check the work get paid for work

Fixed location Leadership 6. Self-discipline Total project 7. One component Large budget 8. Small budget Great risk 9. Small risk End product 10. Partial product
49
Jobs in construction Contractor – owns a company
Contract specialist – interprets contract Estimator – prepares bid Construction Manager – runs complete job Field Engineer – approves/orders matl. Site Engineer – plans site layout Superintendent – manages crews Quality control – inspects work
50
What can you earn? Construction Manager
$50k…. small projects $50,000 to $1mil $80k…. medium projects $1mil to $20mil $150k…. large projects - $20mil to $200mil $250k…. mega projects > $200mil
51
The goal... happy customers!
