1 THE BIG BANG Pg.7 "The Big Bang Theory in 90-Seconds" - TED-Ed (1:31)
"Big Bang Evidence" - STEM Learning (2:50) "The Beginning of the Universe, for Beginners" - TED-Ed (3:19) Pg.7 Ms. King will model this in the first video, You will add to it after watching the next two videos VIDEO 1: answer the 3 Q in complete sentences only (TEACHER WILL MODEL ON BOARD) leave space VIDEOS 2 & 3 write 1 important note from each video (pencil)

2 What is the Big Bang Theory?
The big bang theory states the universe began the size of an atom and violently exploded outwards, eventually cooling and creating larger atomic elements.

3 1. Cosmic Background Radiation (CMB)
(original temperature of the universe) CMB is the “after glow” or “leftover heat” from the big bang that spreads in all directions of the universe. The amount of cooling says how far the light has travelled, which determined the age of the universe: billion years. 3 K (temperature of the universe now) The distribution of cosmic microwave background radiation extends in all directions of the universe, which verifies predictions of universe cooling from a titanic, rapid expansion. Law of conservation of energy “WHAT EVER HAPPENS IN OUTER SPACE, STAYS IN OUTER SPACE”

4 DOPPLER EFFECT SOUND LIGHT An ambulance drives by with its sirens on…
BUT THERE IS NO SOUND IN SPACE… There is LIGHT & light travels SOUND LIGHT An ambulance drives by with its sirens on… Would the sirens sound higher or lower when it comes TOWARDS you? A service car has red and blue blinking lights… Which color would you see as the car comes TOWARDS you? LETS CHECK! LETS CHECK! LETS CHECK!

5 2. Redshift of Galaxies RED LIGHT = long wavelength = moving away from observer BLUE LIGHT = short wavelength = moving towards observer Hubble’s Space Telescope (named after Edwin Hubble) was important in determining how fast these galaxies are moving away. Hubble's galaxy redshift observations shows that most galaxies are moving away from each other. What is a wavelength?

6 3. Mixture of Elements The matter in the universe is about 75% hydrogen & 25% helium. The abundance of lighter elements in the Universe, suggests that these first elements (hydrogen and helium) were formed at the Big Bang and are the precursors for all other elements.

7 INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (pg.7)
#1 MUST include the words (highlight or underline): Red shift galaxy Big bang Parsec Mixture of elements (or hydrogen & helium) Cosmic Background radiation (or CMB) Universe Galaxies Solar system Raise hand for Ms.King to check (STAMP) DONE? Start HW or Clean up Quietly #2 #3
