Today we’re going to talk about why we have safety drills for fire, earthquake and lockdowns. We will discuss Why is it important to listen, How will you react during an emergency, What to do if there is a fire, What to do if there is an earthquake, What to do if there is a hard lockdown or soft lockout and What to do if you are not with your teacher.

4. What types of safety drills do we practice?
Earthquake Drills – Great Shake Out
Fire Drills
Soft Lockout
Hard Lockdown
What type of Safety Drills do we practice at school?
We practice earthquakes drills, like the Great Shake Out in October.
We practice Fire drills.
We also practice soft lockout and hard lockdown drills.

5. How Will I React? You may feel….. Nervous Fast heart rate Scared
Zoned out
Unable to focus
How will I react? During a drill you may feel many different things. You may feel nervous, you may feel your heart beating fast, you may feel scared, zoned out, or unable to focus. All these feelings are okay.

6. How Can I Calm Down? Breathe slowly Count to 10
Close eyes for a moment

How can I calm down? There are many ways to calm yourself down. You can breath slowly, count to 10, or close your eyes for a moment. Can you think of other ways to calm down? (Teacher takes suggestions from class)

7. Why Is It Important To Listen To Directions?
You know what to DO
You know where to GO
You understand the INSTRUCTIONS
You stay SAFE
Why is it important to listen to directions? We should always listen to the adult in charge so we know what to do, we know where to go, and we understand the instructions so we can stay safe.

8. IS DO DON’T Panic Training Necessary The more you discuss and train…..
The more calm you will be
The more likely your body will respond automatically
The more likely you will be safe
We practice these drills throughout the school year. The more we practice, the more calm we will be, the more likely we will automatically know what to do, and the more likely we will be safe. We do not want to panic or run without instructions. We also do not want to pretend like nothing is happening. It is important to stay calm and focused and to listen to directions carefully.

9. What If There’s A Fire? The fire alarm will ring
Listen to your teacher
Stay calm
Follow your teacher
Leave your belongings behind
If there is a fire, the fire alarm will ring. Listen to your teacher. Your teacher will give you instructions on what to do next. Stay calm. Follow your teacher. Your teacher will take you to a safe place . Leave your belongings behind.

10. What If There’s An Earthquake?
Take cover under your desk or away from buildings (depends on where you are)
Listen to your teacher
Stay calm
Follow your teacher

If you are in inside a building, take cover under a desk. If you are outside, move away from buildings.
Say: Remember to drop, cover and hold on! Listen to your teacher. Your teacher will give you instructions on what to do next. Stay Calm. Follow your teacher. Your teacher will take you to a safe place. Leave your belongings behind.

11. What If There’s a Soft Lockout?
Potential threat or police activity on or off school grounds
You will hear an announcement over the loud speaker or from a school adult
Listen to the school adult
Stay calm and continue learning
Depending on the situation, you may move about the campus
If you are outside during a soft lockout, walk to your classroom
What if there’s a soft lockout? A soft lockout is a potential threat or police activity on or off school grounds. You will hear an announcement over the loud speaker or from a school adult. Please listen to the school adult. Stay calm and continue learning. In a soft lockout, depending on the situation, you may move about the campus. If you are outside during a soft lockout, walk directly to you classroom.

12. What If There’s a Hard Lockdown?
Life threatening situation/event on or off school grounds
You will hear an announcement over the loud speaker or from a school adult
Listen to the school adult
Stay calm and quiet
What if there’s a hard lockdown? A hard lockdown is a life threatening situation/event on or off school grounds. You will hear an announcement over the loud speaker or from a school adult. Please listen to the school adult. Remember to stay calm and quiet.

13. Remain in place until you receive an
In a Hard Lockdown…
Lock the door
Cover windows
Turn off lights
Sit or lie on floor
Remain silent
When there is a hard lockdown, lock the door, cover windows, and turn off lights. The school adult may ask you to Sit OR lie on the floor and Remain silent. Remain in place until you receive an “all clear” signal.

14. Interacting with First Responders
If there is an intruder,
DO NOT open doors. Police and district administrators are only adults to open doors.
When you exit, display empty hands & open palms.
Understand the Police officers’ first priority is to make sure the environment is safe.
Once scene is secured, the responders will work with school officials.

If there is an intruder,
Once the door is locked, do not open the door. The police and South Pasadena district administrators will be the only adults that are able to open the doors. When you are instructed to leave the room, display empty hands and open palms. Understand that the police officers’ first priority is to make sure the environment is safe. The police officers will not be interacting with students. Once the scene is secured, the responders will work with the school officials.

15. What If I’m Not With My Teacher?
Stay calm
Follow a school adult’s or police officer’s instructions
Remain in a safe place until a school adult or police officer comes (i.e, bathroom, MPR, auditorium)
What if I am not with my teacher? Stay calm. Follow a school adult’s or police officer’s instructions, If you are alone, remain in a safe place until a school adult or police officer comes. If you are in the bathroom, stay in the bathroom. If you are outside without an adult, go to the nearest safe place.

16. When instructed, leave school only IF the school adult tells you to and it is safe to do so
Leave behind personal belongings
Help others if possible, but go whether others choose to follow or not
Run until you’re in a secure place to hide
If there’s an intruder on campus, you may have to leave school if it is safe to do so AND if your teacher or a school adult tells you to. If you are told to leave school, leave behind your personal belongings, help others if you can, but go even if there are others who do not follow, and run until you are in a safe hiding place.

17. Let’s Review What are the common steps in an emergency?
Let’s review some of what we’ve learned today.
There are 4 types of Safety Drills: Earthquake, Fire, Soft Lockout, and Hard Lockdown. During a drill and during a real emergency, you should always stop, look, and listen.
And always do your best to stay calm.
