CAMA Land Use Plan (LUP)
Collection of policies and maps Serves as a guide for community growth High technical quality Responsive to local needs Support CAMA goals

CAMA Land Use Plan (LUP)
Each county (20) must prepare a local land use plan Each plan must address Protection of productive resources (forest, fisheries) Economic development of the unit Natural resource protection Mitigation of storm hazards

CAMA Land Use Plan Land use plan preparation is supported by grants from the Division of Coastal Management (DCM) DCM provides technical assistance to local governments (county, municipal) CRC “certifies” the local land use plans CAMA permit decisions are based on these land use plans

CAMA Land Use Plan In 1998, Land Use Plan program reviewed and evaluated New principles added to the planning process to develop plans that would support the goals of CAMA

LUP Key Findings Some local officials not involved in the planning process Planning process is too rigid Public participation critical to plan success Plans must support CAMA goals and meet local needs, too

LUP Key Findings Plans must address description of land suitability (limitations) for development Additional financial and technical support from DCM is necessary Natural systems do not follow political boundaries Use watershed approach Support joint plans
