What causes the variation of the isotopic abundance?
1. Decay of radioactive isotopes 2. Isotopic fractionation

----dating techniques
To determine the time ----dating techniques Uranium-lead dating method This scheme has been refined to the point that the error margin in dates of rocks can be as low as less than two million years in two-and-a-half billion years. Potassium-argon dating method Potassium-40 has a half-life of 1.3 billion years, and so this method is applicable to the oldest rocks. Rubidium-strontium dating method This scheme is used to date old igneous and metamorphic rocks, and has also been used to date lunar samples. Uranium-thorium dating method Radiocarbon dating method Chlorine-36 dating method Lead-Caesium dating method
