1 Agenda- September 18 Take out a piece of paper for notes. On one side write “Video Notes”, the other side write “Slavery Notes”. These notes will be turned in on Friday with the other questions from last Friday and yesterday (finish those if you haven’t). You will be writing down ideas that you think you may use for your Acrostic Poem that you will start tomorrow.

4 Slavery Started by the Spanish and Portuguese in the Caribbean for the production of sugar on the sugar plantations. Became very popular in the 1600’s in the Americas.

5 4 Main Reasons Africans were used
Immune to most European diseases. Africans had no place to run if they escaped, nobody to help them. Africans provided a long term source for cheap labor. Many Africans had experience working the land in their native lands.

6 Slavery will last a long time.
In the Americas, slave trade will last almost 400 years (Early 1500’s to the mid 1800’s) In comparison, the U.S. has only been without slavery for 150 years.

7 Slave Trade- Triangular Trade
Triangular Trade- The 3 part system that brought the slaves to the new world. Europe to Africa to the Americas and back to Europe.

8 Terms to be familiar with!
African Diaspora- forced removal of people from Africa. About 12 Million were removed up to the late 1800’s. Middle Passage- voyage from Africa to the Americas which brought the slaves. Slave Codes- laws to regulate the treatment of slaves. Tried to soften the harsh conditions of slavery (didn’t really work). Racism- belief that some people are inferior because of race.

9 Conditions of the Middle Passage

10 Conditions on the Middle Passage
Stuff the boat with as many people as possible in order to get the biggest payout at the end. Expect higher death rates, but with more people, they still will profit. Less crowded in hopes that there will less illness and therefore less death. They will have healthier and more slaves for the trade auction. Tight Packing Loose Packing

11 Tight Packing

12 Life in America Plantation Life
Most slave would go to the South and live/work on plantations. Take a minute and think about what life on a plantation would have been like. What work did slaves do? Which would you prefer to be a house slave or a field slave? Plantation Life
