Chemical Bonds
2
Chemical Bonds A chemical bond holds atoms together with the valence electrons (the outer electrons Three Types of Bonds: Ionic Bond Covalent Bond Metallic Bond
3
Ionic Bonds Ionic Bonds form when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, this process forms ions. These are charged particles. Examples: Cl-, Na+, Mg+2, F- Crystals: it’s a solid repeating pattern of Ions in 3 dimensions Examples: salt, sugar, diamonds, quartz, 26 hundred minerals
4
Covalent Bond A covalent bond is when electrons are shared between atoms. Example: water, carbon dioxide, methane Polyatomic Ions: a molecule with both covalent and ionic bonds. Examples: ammonium, NO3-, PO4-3
5
Metallic Bond Metallic bonds form between metal atoms, the electrons are free to move anywhere with in the mass of the metals. Examples: Copper, steel, iron, tin, titanium Alloys: Different kinds of metals bonded together. Example: brass, bronze, solder.
6
Molecules and Compounds
Molecules are any two or more atoms bonded together, they could be the same or different. Examples: O2, N2, H2O, CO2 Compounds are any two or more different atoms bonded together. Examples: H20, CO2
