Wednesday, 13 May, 2015. Write down anything in GREEN. 90 years after the passage of the 13th Amendment, America still had a legacy of racism. Attitudes and relations between whites and blacks were tense, especially in the southern states. In the 1950s, the Civil Rights movement began to grow stronger, and people pushed for racial equality. Many people – black and white – became involved in the civil rights movement, and certain events helped move it forward. The civil rights movement aimed to take action against inequality and injustice in the United States. One reason the civil rights movement occurred was that people were getting fed up with the way African Americans were being treated in society. The death of Emmitt Till was one event that angered people in the United States, and it led to people speaking out against racism.
