Integrating Quotes IB Prep English

Sandwich vs. Flatbread

Sandwich vs. Flatbread Your words = Bread Author’s words = Filling

Practice: Integrate/embed each of the following quotes seamlessly into a sentence that you create. You MAY NOT begin the quote with, “John said, ‘ ‘ “. Be more creative than that!

Example: “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.” ~ William Golding Integrated: Golding uses Ralph as a mirror for the reader as we ”[weep] for the end of innocence, [and] the darkness of man’s heart” (Golding).

Example: “There is nothing of greater importance to the well-being of society at large – of man as well as woman – than the true and proper position of woman.” ~ Lucretia Mott Integrated: “The true and proper position of woman” is of greatest importance to the health of a society, and should be at the forefront of discussion (Mott).

Now it’s your turn! Integrate this quote into a sentence of your own: 1. “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” ~ Henry Ford

Break this quote up and use parts:
2. “A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.” ~ Hugh Downs

3. “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” ~ Mark Twain 4. “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” ~ Gandhi

Paraphrasing: Put the author’s quote into your own words, changing the text without losing the essential meaning. Quotation marks are no longer needed, because you are no longer quoting the author. Citations are still needed! Why?

Paraphrasing cont.: Reword Rearrange Realize Recheck

Example: “The greatest test of courage is to bear defeat without losing heart.” ~ Robert Ingersoll Paraphrased: There is no greater measure of a man’s courage than to lose without becoming disheartened (Ingersoll).

“We are the choices we make.” ~ Meryl Streep
Now it’s your turn! Paraphrase this quote into a sentence of your own: 5. “We are the choices we make.” ~ Meryl Streep

Last, but not least . . . 6. “We are continually faced with great opportunities brilliantly disguised as insoluble problems.” ~ Lee Iacocca

Summarizing: Put the main idea(s) into your own words; include only the main point(s) Do not put in your own thoughts about the text, nor should you add any opinions. Citations are still needed! Why?
