TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: UNDERSTANDING THE AP PROMPT; DETERMINING ALL PARTS OF A PROMPT TO BE ANSWERED.

2. Bell Work
Use Antithesis to complete each sentence below. Write the sentences.
1. We asked for action, and they gave us ____.
2. We cannot attract new members by our arguments; we must win them by our ___.
3. You paid for service, but they gave you ___.

3. Unpacking An AP Prompt
Can you properly answer a question if you don’t know what is being asked of you?
AP Prompts are known for being wordy.
Today, we will look at how to rewrite the prompt so that it is easier to understand.

4. Unpacking An AP Prompt The AP test:
Approximately 50 multiple choice questions
Three essay questions
1 – prose passage – read passage, then answer question
2 – poetry passage – read poem, then answer question
3 – Open Question – read question, then use a novel you are familiar with to answer the question

5. Unpacking An AP Prompt
The 2009 Prompt – Speech from Shakespeare’s Henry VIII
Extremely wordy prompt
First three lines contain background information pertaining to what has happened in the play prior to this speech
“Read the speech carefully.” – Something similar generally appears in all AP prompts.
”Then…” – Now you’re to the meat of the question!

6. Unpacking An AP Prompt
The 1980 Poetry Prompt – “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop
Prompt is not too wordy, but confusing
“Read the following poem carefully.” – Something similar generally appears in all AP prompts.
“Then write an essay...” – Duh! That’s what this part of the test is all about.
”Describe…” and “Using specific…” – Now you find exactly what you are to do in your essay.

7. Unpacking An AP Prompt The 200- Open Prompt – Violence and Cruelty
The Open Prompt usually give you a theme, then asks you to write about how an author crafted a novel to reflect the theme
A list of possible novels or works will be provided to help jog your memory and generate some idea of what to use to write about.
“Then write an essay...” – Duh! That’s what this part of the test is all about.
You have to choose a work that fits the theme you are being asked to write about. That’s why being familiar with a number of works will help you on the test.
