3 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
After WWII. The United Nations formed in 1945. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was the Chairperson of the UN Commission on Human Rights. She helped to develop the declaration which was adopted on 12/10/1948. We will be reading the preamble (introduction) Whereas = Because

As you read, using the chart found in Google classroom, paraphrase each section of the preamble in your own words. Decide what you think each part means and make sure you write it in a way that you are able to understand it.

9 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Let’s go back through what we read and did yesterday. We are going to look at each section, and I want to hear what YOU came up with as a paraphrase. Now go back to Google Classroom and open the document “Analyzing the Text – Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

14 F.D.R.’s Four Freedoms Speech
Franklin Delano Roosevelt ( ) was the 32nd President of the United States. He was President from 1933 – 1945. He was the ONLY President to ever serve more than two terms. He served three (and was elected to a 4th but died before he could serve much of it). Amendment XXII was passed by Congress in 1947 and ratified by the states in 1951. He was the President throughout most of WWII but died before it’s end in 1945.

15 F.D.R.’s Four Freedoms Speech
In January of 1941, Roosevelt had been reelected to his 3rd term and this was his first major speech of that term; what we call a President’s “State of the Union Address.” The purpose of these speeches is to update Congress and the nation on where we stand as a country and lay out plans for the future. When Roosevelt made this speech, WWII had been going on for about two years, BUT the U.S. was not yet involved in the war. Roosevelt used his speech to try and convince Congress and the nation that we needed to enter the conflict and fight for the rights that ALL people deserved. The U.S. entered the war in December of that same year.

16 F.D.R.’s Four Freedoms Speech
F.D.R.’s wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, used this speech to push for the passing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1945. As we read, look for similarities between this speech and that declaration.
