Chapter 10: Ecosystems section 1: Living Things and the Environment
organism habitat biotic factor abiotic factor photosynthesis species population community ecosystem ecology
5
A. Habitats 1. organism- living thing 2. organism obtains from the environment: -food, water, shelter 3. in order to: -live, grow, reproduce
7
4. One area may contain many habitats.
5. Organisms live in different habitats because they have different needs for survival.
8
B. Biotic Factors An organism interacts with both living and nonliving parts of its habitat. biotic factors- living parts of habitat abiotic factors- nonliving parts of habitat
11
C. Abiotic Factors 1. water- carry out life processes 2. Sunlight- 3. Oxygen- carry out life processes -20% of air is O2 - human body can only live a few minutes without it
12
4. Temperature- the range of temps in an
area determine the types of organisms that can live there
13
5. Soil- mixture of rock fragments, nutrients
air, water, and the decaying remains of living things -the composition of soil in an area influences the kinds of plants that can grow there.
14
D. Levels of Organization
Organisms live together in populations and communities with abiotic factors in their ecosystems. Population: members of one species in a particular area
15
2. Communities- All the different populations
that live together in an area -they interact by sharing the same resources
16
3. Ecosystems -community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving surroundings
17
Ecology: the study of how living things
with each other and with their environment
