2 What does the PSAT test? The PSAT/NMSQT measures the skills and knowledge that research shows are the most essential for college and career readiness and success. The Reading Test: comprehension and reasoning skills The Writing and Language Test: measures a range of skills including command of evidence, expression of ideas, and the use of standard English conventions in grammar and punctuation. The Math Test: problem solving, modeling, using tools strategically, and using algebraic structure. Tied to SC state standards.

3 How is the PSAT scored? Range is 160 to 760
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score combined with Math score is the Total score Range for Total is plus or minus 40 points Range for each section is plus or minus 30 points

4 How can we use the score? Check-in for college readiness (Does your student meet the grade-level benchmark?) Benchmarks for Grade 10 ERW: MATH: 480 Identify relative areas of strength and weakness (i.e., areas in yellow and red)

Continue taking rigorous classes in school (i.e., AP, Honors, Dual Enrollment) Connect to Khan Academy to keep practicing skills Student has identified weak areas: Develop ways to improve weak areas – tutoring, extra practice/enrichment, etc. Connect with Khan Academy – FREE! satpractice.org

7 National Merit Scholarship Competition NMSQT Index – 48 to 228
Doubling sum of Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores. Student has to be a junior to be eligible Nationalmerit.org

8 AP Potential Research-driven tool to identify AP students
PSAT scores (by extension SAT scores) predict student performance on specific AP exams
