8
Today’s Goals: Describe the processes that drive the rock cycle.
Identify the three different types of rocks.
9
Comp book page 16 3 Types of Rocks
10
Igneous Rock Ex. Granite Ex. Rhyolite Intrusive:
*Cools beneath earth’s surface *Cools very slowly *Creates large crystals Extrusive: *Cools above earth’s surface *Cools quickly *Creates very small crystals Formed by melting and cooling Two types Ex. Granite Ex. Rhyolite
11
Sedimentary Rock Formed by compacting and cementing
Has strata (layers) Layers from deposition contains fossils EXAMPLES: Conglomerate Sandstone Siltstone Shale Limestone
12
Metamorphic Rock Examples: Marble Slate Schist Formed by heat/pressure
Deep in the Earth Foliated=grains are in bands Nonfoliated=grain are not in bands Recrystallization=crystals change in size or minerals change in composition Examples: Marble Slate Schist
13
Metamorphic Rock
14
ROCK IDENTIFICATION: Which rock is it??
15
Which type of rock might contain evidence of past life?
#1 Which type of rock might contain evidence of past life? Sedimentary

Which type of rock comes from liquid rock material (magma)?
#6 Which type of rock comes from liquid rock material (magma)? Igenous
21
Which type of rock has 2 types: extrusive and intrusive?
#7 Which type of rock has 2 types: extrusive and intrusive? Igenous
22
Which type of rock is formed deep within the earth?
#8 Which type of rock is formed deep within the earth? Metamorphic
23
Which type of rock has wavy banding called strata?
#9 Which type of rock has wavy banding called strata? Metamorphic
24
Which type of rock is formed from magma that cools down?
#10 Which type of rock is formed from magma that cools down? Igenous
25
Show what you know… Can a sedimentary rock be made from metamorphic rocks? Why or why not?
26
Rock Identification Activity
At each station, there is a different rock. Observe the rock in great detail. Use the guide to identify the rock as either a SEDIMENTARY, METAMORPHIC, or IGNEOUS rock. Challenge! If time allows, use the second key to identify the specific name for the rock. Rotate on the SQUEAK!
