YEAR 11 English EXAM: Friday 14th of September
Time: 12:50 – 4pm 3 hours. WHAT’S IN IT??????? The exam in divided into 3 achievement standards. You have 1 hour for each. 1. 1: Show understanding of specified aspect(s) of studied written text(s), using supporting evidence credits 1.2: Show understanding of specified aspect(s) of studied visual or oral text(s), using supporting evidence Credits 1.3 Show understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar written text(s) through close reading, using supporting evidence 4 Credits

1.1: Show understanding of specified aspect(s) of studied written text(s), using supporting evidence credits This achievement standard is asking you to write an essay about any text you have studied this year that is written. Short Stories -‘Superman and Paula Brown’s New Snowsuit’ By Silvia Plath - ‘The Dolls House’ By Katherine Mansfield Novel ‘The Secret Live of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins……….if you are Cianell. You can choose to write about one short story if you like but you are more likely to write a better essay if you compare and contrast ideas in both .

1.2: Show understanding of specified aspect(s) of studied visual or oral text(s), using supporting evidence Credits This achievement standard asks you to write about a film you have studied this year in class. You have only watched one complete film. You will write about…. ‘Billy Elliot’ directed by Stephen Daldrey. ‘Life is Beautiful’ directed by Robert Benigni - Cianell In a film essay it’s really important that you do remember to discuss film techniques. Examiners will be looking to see that you are familiar with these and most essay questions will ask you to include them in your essay.

1.3 Show understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar written text(s) through close reading, using supporting evidence 4 Credits This standard is testing your ability to read texts you haven’t not read before and to understand what they mean and their purpose. You will be asked 3 questions on 2 different texts. The kinds of texts that you will probably be given will be a poem - an article - a column piece - extract from a short story Each question is scaffolded into a), b), c) and d). That means they go from easy to more difficult. If you answer a) and b) correctly you will gain an A for that question. If you answer c) correctly you will gain M If you answer d) correctly you will gain E To pass the whole paper you have get 2 out of the 3 questions correct.

Tricks that can help you in the exam.
ACRONYMS to remember the MAIN THEMES in your texts. Why? Because every essay is a THEME essay. ‘The Dolls House’ ‘The Secret Life Of Bees’ Division and prejudice of social class Secrets and lies Ostracisation and isolation Learning to Cope Learning to see hope for the future Ostracisation and community Light and awakening Being motherless/Queenlessness Billy Elliot Being trapped Inspiration and imagination to follow your dreams Love comes in many different forms Learning to accept others You can be yourself Choose one of these texts. For each theme find a quotation that backs it up. 5 min.

Explain why an aspect(s) of setting helped you understand a key idea(s) in the text(s). Note: Setting could include time and / or place. 4. Describe at least ONE language feature that was used to help you understand an important idea in the text(s). Explain why the language feature(s) helped you understand a key idea(s) in the text(s). Note: Language feature(s) could include imagery, style, vocabulary, or symbolism. 5. Describe at least ONE event at or near the end of the text(s) that was important. Explain why the event helped you understand a key idea(s) in the text(s). 6. Describe at least ONE important conflict in the text(s). Explain why the conflict helped you understand a key idea(s) in the text(s).
