Macabre (muh-kah-brah)
Adjective Definition: gruesome or morbid in nature, usually describing something to do with death Other Forms: alternate pronunciation: muh-kahb Good Way to Remember: “My Aunt Cindy Asphyxiated Before REwedding” would be considered a macabre sentence. Sentence: The characters in the macabre short story died gruesome deaths.

Oxymoron (ok-si-mawr-on)
Noun Definition: figure of speech that makes a contradictory statement Other Forms: oxymoronic (adjective) oxymoronically (adverb) Good Way to Remember: “Oxy” by itself means “sharp,” which can be a colloquialistic way to say intelligent. Morons are not intelligent. Therefore, oxymoron is an oxymoron. Sentence: The phrase “alone together” has always been my favorite oxymoron.

Adjective Definition: a word or phrase intended to insult Other Forms: pejoratively (adverb) nonpejorative (adjective) nonpejoratively (adverb) unpejorative (adjective) unpejoratively (adverb) Good Way to Remember: “Pejorative” loosely rhymes with “pet your kid.” You pet your dog but not your kid…and your kid is insulted. Sentence: He was punished for using pejorative words to describe an administrator.

Polysyndeton (pol-ee-sin-di-ton)
Noun Definition: repetitive usage of conjunctions in a sentence Other Forms: none Good Way to Remember: “Polysyndeton” has 2 y’s in it. In Spanish, “y” means “and.” It can be said that polysyndetons have multiple “and’s” in them. Sentence: The multiple polysyndetons in her essay made the flow choppy and crude.

Proselytize (pros-uh-li-tahyz)
Verb Definition: an attempt to get people to believe in a certain religion and cause Other Forms: proselytistic (adjective) proselytization (noun) proselytizer (noun) Good Way to Remember: a politician may proselytize, or “propose lies” to get you to support his or her cause Sentence: They used their position of power to proselytize their extreme religious ideals.
