1
Viral Reproduction Lytic Virus: Virus replicates within cell then burst host cell open.
2
Viral Reproduction (con’t)
Lysogenic Virus: Virus inserts DNA, replicates, but DOESN’T destroy host cell.
3
Virus Specificity Viruses infect a narrow range of hosts because the outer coat.
4
Bacteria: The Prokaryotes
A. Prokaryote: Lack nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; small size; single, circular strand of DNA.
5
Bacterial Shapes B. Cell Shapes: 1. Bacillus – rod-shaped
2. Coccus – round-shaped 3. Spirillum – spiral-shaped
6
Bacteria C. Anatomy: Cell wall (with peptidoglycan), cell membrane, flagella, ribosomes and DNA. D. Endospore: A thick coat around DNA and cytoplasm to ‘hibernate.’

Bacterial Diseases
10
II. How Bacteria Feed Autotrophs- Obtain energy from inorganic sources. 1. Photosynthesis – Use sunlight. 2. Chemoautotrophs – Heat vents, geysers in Yellowstone. Use inorganic molecules (no C-H bonds) as an energy source.
11
II. How Bacteria Feed B. Heterotrophs – Get energy from organic sources. a. Decomposers – Break down dead matter. b. Aerobic – Requires oxygen. c. Nitrogen Fixation – Bacteria in root of legumes add ‘fertilizer’ to soil.
12
III. Bacterial Disease Pathogen – Disease-causing agent.
Toxins- Some bacteria produce toxins. Botulism: Improperly canned food. Food Poisoning: Usually takes 12-24 hours.
13
Botox

IV. Antibiotics Antibiotics: Drugs useful in killing bacteria but not other organisms.
