New Instructions for Tardy Bell Challenge Activities
This 9 weeks, we will read two text related to our sports unit. We will read The Heat by Mike Lupica as a class with activities in our reading & writing circles. We will read The Crossover by Kwame Alexander independently as our tardy bell challenge activities.

New Instructions for Tardy Bell Challenge Activities
Daily, you will independently read selected chapters from The Crossover and complete assignments during the 20 minute process. Some of the activities include: Text-based questions Writing prompts Poetry analysis Text to text comparisons Assessments & quizzes Assignments for The Crossover will be in your notebook & graded weekly. You will have 2 folders, one labeled reading & one labeled writing. Each assignment will identify which folder the assignments belongs in.

Criteria for Success… At the end of today’s lesson, we will understand the importance of following the classroom guidelines, classroom procedures, and working as a team to create a safe, healthy, and productive learning environment.

Guideline #1: Be Respectful: Our class is a community a society within itself. It is everyone’s responsibility to be accountable for them, how they treat others. We will treat each other with dignity and respect. There is zero tolerance for bullying in any form in this classroom.

Guideline #2: Stay Focus on the task at all times: We have a lot to learn this year and the expectation is that every student will be accountable for their learning. There will be many opportunities for group work and projects that require attention to detail. It is the student’s responsibility to remain focused on the tasks presented in the classroom.

Guideline #3: Follow Directions: There are many students in this class that I as the teacher that I have the responsibility to educate. It is important that students follow the directions that I give the first time that I am given to prevent repetitive instruction giving that can hinder instructional time. Students must be accountable for them and respect the directions given.

Guideline #4: Obey School Policy. Students are required to know and understand the expectations presented in the student handbook and adhere to all policies.

Entering the Classroom Enter quietly Have a seat in your assigned seat Take out your supplies for class Complete the daily bell challenge activity Review and copy homework assignment in your agenda (this will be checked weekly for a grade) When you are tardy for class: Enter quietly (You MUST have a tardy slip) Place tardy slip in the appropriate basket Have a seat and take out your supplies You are still responsible for copying the homework in your agenda book. You may not copy it down during instructional time.

Heading your paper: Always head your paper on the right side of the paper Include your name, the date, the class, the class period, and assignment title Remember this is necessary for grading. Assignments will not be graded if they do not have student name and class period correctly labeled. Submitting Assignments: Classroom Assignments Assignments will be turned in during the last 5 minutes of class each day Assignments completed in folders & notebooks will remain in the folder or notebook in chronological order. All assignments will be graded on Friday and returned on Monday.

Missing Assignments & Absences A folder will be placed in the back of the class with the weekly assignments. It is your job to get all of your missing assignments and turn them in. If your absence is excused, there will be no point deductions. If your absence is unexcused, you will receive a 10 point deduction. Extra Credit Assignments: Extra credit will be completed through Moby Max during the 2nd semester. When you log into your account using you MSIS number, you will find assignments that I have assigned to you. Extra credit will be uploaded on the fifth day of the month and will be due on the last school day of the month.

Homework Assignments Will be listed on the board every Monday morning. Some homework assignments will require you to have internet assess to complete them. It is your responsibility to copy the weekly homework assignments. Homework that is signed by a parent or guardian will receive 3 points added to their homework grade. All homework assignments will be due on the following day completed. ALL HOMEWORK WILL BE GRADED! No homework assignments will be accepted late if you will miss class for any reason on Friday you may submit it early. If extenuating circumstances occur, your parents may contact me via remind chat or the class .

Finishing Assignments Early: You may: Work on unfinished class assignments Read your book talk novel or work on your book talk Review materials for an upcoming assessment Work on extra credit assignment You may not: Talk to or disturb your peers Work on assignments unrelated to our class Use your electronic devices Walk around the classroom .

Moving Around the Classroom: You must have permission to go around the classroom Restroom & Throwing Away Trash Policy Do not get out of your seat to throw away trash. Please place trash at the end of your desk and I will throw it away for you. Restroom breaks will be giving during the second half of the class. Please go to the bathroom before you come to class. If you have extenuating circumstances, please have your parents contact me via remind chat or the class

Class Dismissal: I dismiss the class not the bell Do not start packing your supplies before the bell I will inform you when it is time to start cleaning up Your area must be clean and neat before you are dismissed I will dismiss students by groups Leave the classroom quietly and remain quiet in the hallway If you are disruptive, talking, standing, or in anyway not following the dismissal rules, you will be late to your next destination. It is up to you how long we wait to dismiss.

Cellphone & Other Electronic Use of cellphones and other electronic devices is not permitted in the classroom. Students are required to turn their phones off before they enter the classroom and place it in their pockets. Students caught using their cellphones or other electronic devices in class will be referred to the office. Students will have technology days in the class where they will have the freedom to use their cellphones or other electronic devices to complete assignments.

Teamwork verses Group Work
Is there really a difference? YES!!!!! Teams definitely are forms of work groups, but not all work groups are teams. To call a group a team does not make them a team: wishing for them to work as a team doesn't work either. For a snapshot of the main differences between work groups and teams, take a look at our next slide. As you do, notice that work groups have a strong individual focus and teams have a strong collective focus

Discussion: With your table group, share out examples of times where each of you have been members of a group, and times where you were members of a team. Important Information: Literature Circles, Workshops,& Notebooks
During this semester, we will implementing these strategies more in the classroom. As we read our novels, we will have activities that require you to work in your literature circles to discuss and respond to text. We will hold various writing workshops using mentor text to improve our writing. We will use our notebooks (reader & writer) to respond to text throughout the semester. You will be responsible for maintaining and keeping your own work.
