Children need guidance (discipline) to grow into responsible, caring adults Parents can use discipline to guide children Discipline is teaching What are some effective discipline strategies???

3 WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GUIDE
The most effective discipline style is a delicate balance between warmth/acceptance and parental control/strictness. 2. An authoritative parenting style is associated with a variety of positive outcomes for children.

Understanding of child development is crucial. 4. Consistency in guidance is important to children.

5 WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT GUIDE
Ineffective discipline choices are associated with a variety of personal and family stressors. Guidance is part of a relationship in which each person influences and is influenced by the other.

6 DISCIPLINE To guide & teach
Same category as loving, respecting, & accepting

7 DISCIPLINE Purpose is to raise responsible, confident children who will grow up to be thinking & caring adults Teaching children appropriate behavior Not punishment

8 ABC MODEL A = Antecedent; what came before the behavior; feelings , needs , beliefs drive behavior B = Behavior; what the child does or says C = Consequence; the response to the child’s behavior
