1
Facts about Ozone Discovered in 1839 by German scientist Christian Friedrich Schonbein Derived from the Greek word meaning ‘to smell” Relatively unstable molecule of 3 oxygen atoms Powerful oxidizing agent
2
Present Day Atmosphere
Major components are: Oxygen: 21% Nitrogen: 78% Argon: .93%
4
The Process of Ozone Depletion
CFCs released CFCs rise into the ozone UV releases Cl from the CFCs Cl destroys ozone Depleted ozone = more UV
5
Not a hole but a thin layer
CFC’s does not drill a hole in the ozone layer But it thins the layer This allows more UV rays to enter the atmosphere
6
Harmful effects of UV radiation
Sunburn Premature aging of skin Suppression of immune system Cataracts Skin Cancer
