Holy Roman Empire By the 900’s Frankish Kingdom was a group of small territories called Germany. 936 – Duke Otto of Saxony elected King of Germany. 962 Pope names Otto, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Frederick I & II tried to unite Germany and Italy. The Pope resisted.

Christianity in Europe
400’s AD Priest Patrick spread Christianity in Ireland. Pope Gregory I Spread Christianity. 597 Gregory sends 40 Monks to Britain.

Contributions of Monks and Nuns
Monks / Nuns provided schools and hospitals. Monks copied the Roman and Greek works. Monks lived in monasteries. Nuns in convents.

Church Authority Monasteries became wealthy, active in political affairs. King wanted the Pope to obey them, Pope wanted the King to obey the church. 1073- Pope Gregory VII - declared only the Pope could appoint church officials. Excommunicated Henry IV.

Result: 1122 Concordat of Worms. Agreement –Pope / Ruler. Agreement that only the Pope could appoint bishops but only King could give them govt. posts. *Concordant- Agreement between pope and ruler of a country *
