Andrew Marvell was born in Yorkshire in 1621, the son of a reverend (also called Andrew). He attended a range of schools including Cambridge. From around 1642 Marvell travelled around Europe. Upon returning to England (after the civil war had finished) Marvell worked for Lard Fairfax as his daughter’s tutor) and then later for Oliver Cromwell (as his ward’s tutor). T.C is Theophilia Cornwell, the daughter of one of Marvell’s friends. During his time Marvell wrote some politically challenging and satirical poems. Although they were only published after his death. As a metaphysical poet, Marvell’s poetry is full of elaborate conceits. In this poem, the image of the child is used to convey the transience of spring and the fragility of childhood. It could also be interpreted as a indictment of the violence of the civil war. Marvell wants the girl to remain ‘coy’, perhaps suggesting that she should be innocent of the world around her as it is too violent and will only taint her purity.
