Bell Ringer: On the blank side of a notecard create A,B,C,D sides
Write your name at the top on the back side Homework: Classify Matter Table
2
Everything that has mass and volume is called matter
What is matter? Everything that has mass and volume is called matter It cannot be created or destroyed
3
Kinetic Molecular Theory
all matter is made up of small particles that are always in motion. The kinetic energy (speed) of these particles increases as temperature increases.
4
Phases of Matter Solid Liquid Gas Plasma
5
Solids- (s) Kinetic Molecular Theory very low KE - particles vibrate
but can’t move around fixed shape fixed volume Kinetic Molecular Theory Molecules are held close together and there is very little movement between them.
6
Kinetic Molecular Theory:
Liquids-(l) low KE - particles can move around but are still close together variable shape fixed volume Kinetic Molecular Theory: Atoms and molecules have more space between them than a solid does, but less than a gas (ie. It is more “fluid”.)
7
Kinetic Molecular Theory:
Gases-(g) high KE - particles can separate and move throughout container variable shape variable volume Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecules are moving in random patterns with varying amounts of distance between the particles.
8
QUICK CHECKS: Classify the following image as
a. (s) b. (g) c. (l) d. (aq)

Classifying Matter- Pg 18 & 19
Atoms Compounds Mixtures
10
Atoms Building blocks of matter- cannot be divided
Made up of protons (p+), electrons (e-), neutrons (n0) Also known as an element Li Li Li Cl Cl Cl
11
Diatomic Elements BrINClHOF
Atoms that must be bonded to something due to their instability When alone they bond to themselves Cl Cl Cl Cl
12
Compounds 2+ elements chemically bonded together
Must undergo a chemical change to break apart Li Li Li Cl Cl Cl
13
QUICK CHECKS: Classify the following image as
a. Element b. Diatomic Element c. Compound d. Mixture
14
Homogeneous Mixtures 2+ elements or compounds that are evenly mixed together There is no visible layer Can be separated through physical means Li Cl Al Al Li Cl Cl Al Li
15
Heterogeneous Mixtures
2+ elements or compounds that are unevenly mixed together There is a visible layer Can be separated through physical means Li Cl Al Al Li Cl Cl Al Li
16
QUICK CHECKS: Classify the following image as
a. Element b. Heterogeneous Mixture c. Compound d. Homogeneous Mixture
