We focus here on how mentors can be valuable, however, this can also be looked at in different ways. Including, what you should look for in mentors or skills/talents you should have or seek as a mentor. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the traits that make a good leader often make a good mentor. In Facilitating the Development of Effective Leaders in the Right Positions

2 What’s a Mentor anyway Mentor Coach Sponsor
Mentor = discusses options with the mentee Coach = tells the mentee what is good for them Sponsor = talks about the mentee to others and promotes them and their talent to create opportunities. This is also a good time to potentially mention their rolls can overlaps often time minorities and women have problems finding one or multiple of these circles.

Mentors Networking Training Programs/ Workshops Cultural/ Political Change Opportunities Skills & Preparations Simplified way of thinking about how opportunities can occur for leadership and how one can increase their skills and preparation. A key point to note is that mentors are one of if not the only bridge that an help provide opportunities and increase skills/preparations. It is also important to note the need for multiple mentors as they provide different skill sets, experience, and opportunities for individuals to be placed in positions of leadership where they can succeed and be effective. How Mentors Can Help Training Programs/ Workshops Networking Facilitating opportunities where one can increase skills. E.g. letters of recommendation, encouraging application to fellowships, recommending attendance to conference, etc. Directly or indirectly connecting individuals by encouraging attendance to key people, events, conferences, etc. Mentors Opportunities Skills and Preparation Objectively assessing one’s skills and preparation. Facilitating ways for one to improve gaps. Directly teaching lessons or skills. Sharing personal experiences to help prevent missteps increase preparation. Creating, assessing, and finding opportunities for an individual. Informing individuals about funding, institutional culture, and leadership turnover.

Opportunity Skills & Preparation Good mentors are key to help prevent leaders from getting into situations where they are under utilized or overwhelmed. One important way to prevent underutilization and being overwhelmed is to give mentees information on institutional culture, sharing personal experiences, helping to align mentees with their vision/goals. 7 When Mentorship Should End?
Short answer: Never Mentor Mentor Mentor You will always have a need/benefit from mentors. Their roles and what you need from them as a mentee changes as you advance in leadership, opportunities change, etc. However, you don’t need to keep the same mentors and relationship with your mentors can evolve to colleague, friend, etc. Having internal and external mentors are important as they provide different perspective and help one be more effective and prepared in the leadership position even if not seeking ultimate promotion.
