2. Container Theory
The Container concept is a way to understand how these elements occur in an educational setting. The fish represents the people within a system, and the water represents the climate (or environment) in which the people operate, or exist.

3. Not all containers are healthy…
It is important to keep in mind that containers have their own unique qualities – they can be stimulating and enriching, or bland and boring. They can be clean and healthy or polluted and toxic.

4. Collaboration or Protection?
Some environments promote collaboration and teamwork… While others cause people to feel under threat and protect themselves.
With that in mind. there are two main parts to the container…

The water represents the environment or climate in a system. This includes norms, relationships, and group dynamics – basically how people interact.

Quantity – how much you completed, and Quality – how well you think you did. Now I have another picture. We will do the same thing – memorize for 10 seconds, then attempt to draw it from memory as best you can.

Please rate yourself again from 1-10 on both quantity and quality. Which do you feel was the better attempt – Picture #1 or Picture #2? They are using the same shapes. Why do you think you did better on the one picture compared to the other? It is my experience that efforts to support our vision for student success can be piecemeal.
