1 Objective: Students will convert fractions to decimal equivalents.
January 4, Math 201 Objective: Students will convert fractions to decimal equivalents. Aim: How can we remember some common fraction-decimal conversions? NYS Mathematics Standards: 6.N.11, 6.N.21 Prior Knowledge: What part of One Dollar is a penny? How do we write that as a fraction? What part of a dollar is a nickel, and how do we write that as a fraction? A dime? A quarter?

2 Mini-lesson: One good way of understanding how to convert fractions into decimal equivalents is to think of MONEY! When we talk about hundredths, we go 2 places to the RIGHT of the decimal point!

3 What operation does a fraction mean?
Sometimes a fraction won’t have 100 in the denominator, so… Another way of finding the decimal equivalent of a fraction is to think of what a fraction represents… What operation does a fraction mean? Example (Let’s work this out…) So…

4 Who can figure out what equals?
Because this decimal doesn’t end, it is called a “non-terminating” decimal.

5 Convert the fraction to a decimal.
Example Convert the fraction to a decimal. (Let’s work it out) Now, you try

6 Once we have a decimal, it is really easy to convert that to a percent…
= 20% To convert a decimal to a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right and insert a percent symbol (“%”) after the number.

7 56% Convert the decimal .56 to a percent
Example Convert the decimal .56 to a percent First, think of place value. Move the decimal point in 0.56 two places to the right. 0.56 then insert a percent symbol at the end of the number. 56%

8 Today, we learned to convert a fraction to a decimal:
Fractions like 5/100, 10/100, 25/100 make you think of MONEY and the decimal equivalents are in cents: $0.05, $0.10, $0.25 Fractions that don’t have 100 in the denominator, just divide the denominator into the numerator And we learned to convert a percent to a decimal: First, think of place value. Move the decimal point two places to the right. Then insert a percent symbol at the end of the number
