1 MEASUREMENTS AND SCIENTIFIC TOOLS
LESSON 2

2 DESCRIPTIONS 2 TYPES OF DESCRIPTIONS
1. Quantitative- uses numbers to describe the observation. Ex. There are 3 dogs 2. Qualitative- uses your senses(sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) to describe an observation. Ex. The salty fries

3 INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS
Known as SI units Derived fro seven base units. Adopted by all scientists Table 2 Prefixes: indicate a fraction or a multiple of the base unit Prefixes are based on the powers of ten Table 3

4 PRECISION VS. ACCURACY 4 out of 4 basketballs fall in the basket.
Accuracy is a description of how close a measurement is to an accepted or true value. -4 out of 4 basketballs hit the rim. Precision is a description of how similar or close measurements are to each other. 4 out of 4 basketballs fall in the basket.

5 Scientific Tools Science Journal
Balances- triple beam balances, scales Thermometer Glassware Compound Microscope Computers Magnifying Lens Slide Pipette Dissecting Tools

6 Triple Beam Balances

7 Thermometer- measures temperature of substances
0⁰Celsius = 32⁰ Fahrenheit 1⁰Fahrenheit = ⁰ Kelvin

8 Graduated Cylinders Meaures volume – liquids
Meniscus – the lowest point of the “U” of the liquid

9 Beakers Must be on a flat surface to read the results.
Measures liquids Must be eye level to read the results

10 Erlenmeyer Flasks Mixing, measuring and storing liquids
