DISCUSSION DR SARALA SUNDER
2
DISCUSSION It is the critical part of the thesis writing
It returns to the significant argument set up in the introduction and answers the questions posed at the beginning of the study . It places the study within the broader context of how this particular study is going to add to the diagnosis or treatment or patient care.
3
Give answers to questions raised in introduction , hence Re read the introduction carefully before starting to write discussion For every experimental that has been obtained in the study , results from other publications bearing relationship to your result are discussed - as agreeing with , extending the result, refining the existing result or conflicting it..
4
WRITING DISCUSSION Provide interpretation of result
Explain the implication of findings Compare with other similar research Discusss important differences Mention limitations of the study Gives direction for future studies.
5
WRITING contd… High light new and important findings and provide possible explanations Corroborate with previous work – compare and contrast, highlight differences provide reasons . Summarize implications regardless of statistical significance and discuss possible clinical applications of the findings
6
WRITING contd … Identify contradictory and unexplained findings with possible explanations State the limitations of the methods used and honestly explain how these limitations have influenced the results or the interpretations Provide a precise conclusion and link them to the objective of the study Suggest precisely about further study that could take the research forward.
7
FORMAT Each paragraph begins with the results, ends with the recommendation or explanation , and in the middle have other studies that can be compared with Use past tense to report results, present tense to explore implications FOLLOW THE SAME SEQUENCE AS RESULTS
8
EXAMPLE Result: The incidence of ROP : 21%
Discussion: At 21% incidence the ROP incidence in this study was lower than that reported in literature. Other studies 2,3,4,5 have reported incidence as high as 38-48%, wherein babies with lower birth wt and lower gestational age have been included. Thus each NICU could conduct audits and establish their set of criteria for ROP screening.
9
CONCLUDING THE DISCUSSION
Concluding sentences could be definitve Or possibly/perhaps Or more studies are required.
10
Common errors Repetition of results in detail
Incorrect intepretation of results Important results inadequately discussed Irrelevant discussion Conclusion not supported by findings
