Ship the Chip Challenge

Problem Statement & Design Brief
Working in teams of 2 – 3 you will design and test a package to safely ship a single Pringles Potato Chip through the US Postal Service from Manalapan, NJ to Cranford, NJ (a distance of approximately 38 miles). Upon arrival, the chips will be evaluated and scored based upon the mass of the package and the condition of the chip when it arrives here at HAS and we open it up. Your goal is to engineer a package to have the smallest mass and volume, while protecting the chip so that it arrives at its destination undamaged.

Design Brief Specifications and Challenge Rules
Students will be use 1 (regular) Pringles Potato Chip. No substance may be applied to the chip, or the chip altered in any way. 3. The chip must be recoverable and edible (but please, don’t eat it) when it arrives here at HAS 4. Students will work individually or in small groups to design and test the package. 5. No pre-made Pringles containers should be used (ex. specially designed Pringles containers for lunch boxes, Pringles cans, etc.)

There is a 3” x 5” minimum package size – anything smaller than this will not be mailed and your team will be disqualified. Your package must be clearly labeled on the outside and addressed to: Hillside Avenue School Makers Names of Group Members c/o K. Girone 125 Hillside Avenue Cranford, NJ 07016 (If special unpacking instructions are needed they should also be included). Your group may NOT write “Fragile” or “Handle with Care” on the outside of the package

Scoring Three measurements must be collected to determine scoring for the Ship the Chip Challenge: 1. Mass - measured in Kg to at least 3 significant figures 2. Volume - measured in cubic centimeters to at least 3 significant figures 3. Intactness score of the chip as determined by the evaluating school, according to the chart on the following slide
