Be able to name alkanes given their structure and draw their structure given their name. Name alkanes using the following rules: Identify the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms. Name the longest continuous chain. Number the carbon atoms in the longest chain so that the numbers of the branches have the lowest possible total. Number and name the branches, separating the number from the name with a hyphen, using prefixes (di, tri etc) when there is more than one of the same type of branch, and commas to separate numbers. Write the name as one word, beginning with the branches (including their numbers) in alphabetical order, separating each different branch with a hyphen, and writing the name of the longest continuous chain last.

Understand the difference between a “saturated” and an “unsaturated” molecule. Define the terms “saturated” and “unsaturated” in terms of the carbon-to-carbon double bond. Classify molecules as saturated or unsaturated given their name, molecular or structural formula. Know how to carry out a chemical test to demonstrate if a molecule is saturated or unsaturated. Describe the experiment, including: the name of the chemical you would use to distinguish between a saturated and unsaturated molecule. the starting and finishing colours of the molecule. safety precautions you should take in using the chemical.

Understand what “catalytic cracking” is and why it is an important industrial process. Describe what catalytic cracking is, making reference to the relative size of molecules and how useful they are. Name, write the molecular formulae or draw the structural formula for the possible products of cracking, given information about the parent alkane. Explain why at least one of the products of cracking will always be unsaturated. State two advantages of using a catalyst in cracking. Know how catalytic cracking can be carried out in the laboratory. Describe how to carry out cracking in the laboratory, making reference to: the need to heat the reactant the name of the catalyst used why at least one of the products will be a gas how to collect the products underwater, without allowing “suck-back” names or structures of the reactants.
