Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos

Baroque Concertos In the Renaissance, songs were written for families or consorts of instruments (like strings, recorders, or singers). In the Baroque period, a concerto combines different types of instruments into the same song. (“Concerto” is Italian for “together.”) The concerto grosso also passes the melody back and forth from a small group of solo instruments to the entire group. Group Soloist 1 Soloist 2 Etc…

Brandenburg Concertos
In 1721, Bach wrote a set of 6 concerto grossos for the Margrave of Brandenburg (like a duke). Unfortunately, the Margrave didn’t have enough players in his court orchestra to play it, and so it sat unused on his shelf for 128 years when they were discovered in the Brandenburg library. They are now considered to be some of the best orchestra music of the Baroque Period.
