5 Comparison between CONVENTIONAL Lightning Conductor and the PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCER based ACTIVE Lightning Conductor INTRODUCTION : The purpose of any Lightning Conductor is to divert to itself a lightning discharge, which might otherwise strike a vulnerable part of the structure to be protected. The protection against direct lightning strikes is designed to capture the lightning impact, channel it and discharge it to the earth. HOW DOES A CONVENTIONAL LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR WORKS The conventional rod offers a cone of protection based upon its installed height above the structure. Normally Conventional rod is commanded non-effective above m height and continuously reduces the protection angles with increased structure height. Thus every Conventional Lightning Conductor has a radius of protection, which depends on the height of the Conductor above the point of installation. For example as per the IS Standards a conventional lightning rod with 2 meters height above the building shall be able to give a radius of protection of 2 meters (this is calculated as per IS standards where angle of protection for the conventional rod is 45 degrees – which means the radius of protection is 2 x tan 45 = 2 meters). This radius is equivalent to a protected area of 12.5 sq meter. NOTE – If the height of the conventional rod is decreased to 1 meter for example then the number of rods to be used for the same area is increased to twice as the radius of protection reduces to just 1 meter. This shows that for a building of 12m length x 12m breadth i.e. a roof area of 144 sq meters, we shall have to use more than 12 conventional lightning conductors of height 2 meters each, with each of them having a separate down conductor and a separate earth pit. PIEZO ELECTRIC TRANSDUCER BASED ACTIVE LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR. The New Lightning conductor is a dynamic device, which require no external source of power supply. This remarkable terminal has the ability to concentrate only the electric field, which occur in millisecond time slot as the lightning charges approach to ground. The unique lightning

6 protection system has been designed to provide repetitive electrical discharge only during the time of approach of the charges downwards. This result in the presence of photo-ionization and free electron without the substantial space charge. As a result mostly only one lightning conductor is required against a very large number of Conventional Lightning conductors The radius of protection for the new Active Lightning conductor is much larger compared to conventional rod. This is because the Piezoelectric Transducer is able to actively generate additional ionization. For example at a height of just 2 m above the building the radius of protection can be achieved for a minimum length of 13 meters. This figure below…

shows that for the same dimensions of the building i.e. 12m x 12 m, just one Active Piezoelectric Transducer based lightning conductor is sufficient to provide protection to the entire building area. Hence apart from a completely safe protection system, some of the other important advantages of the NEW Piezoelectric Lightning Conductor can also be summarized as follows: 1. Just ONE Lightning conductor can be used to cover a maximum 80 meters of protection radius. 2. The designer of the lightning protection system needs no tedious calculations for deciding the installing points of the large number of rods. 3. The conventional system requires additional safety measures for domes, antennae etc on the top of the building. 4. Only one down conductor is required. 5. Only one earth pit is required. 6. The building’s aesthetic appearance is not compromised. 7. No maintenance required.

8 Theory of operation The Advanced Lightning Conductor has a special excitation device that is able to generate additional ions during lightning thunder storms. During lightning the charges from the clouds tend to move towards the earth, they try to find oppositely charged objects like trees, towers, buildings etc. Has by default enough charge to move upwards in direction of lightning charge. Whichever object is able to send the upward charge first is able to form with the down streamer where we can see lightning strike. The advanced Piezo Electric based lightning conductor due to its extra ionization capacity is able to send the upward streamer earlier than other objects (15 to 60 Micro seconds earlier than the possible surroundings). By the calculations the speed of the streamers, which is 100 Kms/Sec or Equal to 1 mtr/Micro-Second, the streamers are able to reach 15 to 60 Mtrs higher than the surrounding structures. Due to this increased height of the streamers from this advanced Piezo Electric excitation device the radius of protection is enhanced for a distance upto 80 Mtrs.
