Engaging children in exciting and engaging mental maths homework.
2
Multiplication War Remove the Jacks, Kings and Queens from a regular deck of cards. Shuffle. Players place cards face down in a pile. At the count of three, both players flip over their first card. The first person to say the product of the 2 cards receives both cards and puts them in a separate pile. If both players say the answer at the same time, the cards are put in the middle of the table. The next player to win the "flip" gets the cards in the middle of the table in addition to the cards just played. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of play.
3
Salute 3 player game Take the face cards and jokers out of a pack of cards. Player 1 and 2 each select a card and place it on their foreheads without looking at it. They can see what each other has but not their own. Player 3 (who can see both cards) mentally adds/multiplies the numbers on the cards and tells the other players the total/product. Players 1 and 2 then have to try and work out what number they have. The winner is the first person to correctly shout out their number.
4
Top It! Ace = 1, Jack = 11, Queen and King = 12 (can assign different values). Each player turns over two cards and adds/multiplies them together. The player with the greatest sum/product wins all the cards. Continue until all the cards are gone.
5
Power Tower Write number sentences on the outside of cups and the answers on the inside. Children answer the questions and if they get them correct they can add them to the tower. Children have 1 minute to see how big they can make their towers.
6
Block Towers Children to have cards with questions on one side and answers on the back. They take it in turns to ask the question, if the answer is correct they get the card and can start to make a tower picture on the table. The winner is the person with the biggest tower in 1 minute.
7
Fantastic Fingers Each player says ‘Bing, bong, zong’ then holds out 1-10 fingers. Players multiply the 2 numbers and race to shout out the product. The winner is the first person to shout out the correct answer.
8
Dice Slam Children work in pairs – each child has a dice.
Start with 10 counters in the middle. On the count of 3 they slam their dice down on the table. The winner is the first person to shout out the product of the two numbers. The winner collects a counter. After 10 goes the winner is the person with the most counters.
