Already talked about multiple stresses at a point:
Beams – get both shear stress and normal stress Pressure vessels – get two normal stresses Now look at stresses at a point due to combined loading. Procedure: Must decide where the critical point is (i.e. where does maximum stress occur?) Cut the member at that point and solve for internal forces Determine stresses from these internal forces Add “like stresses, i.e.: stotal = s1 + s2 + s3 + ….……….. ttotal = t1 + t2 + t3 + …………… Summarize these stresses on a stress element – called alligned stress element or initial stress element.
