Bell work – 3 minutes Pick a science word and write the definition in the back of your notebook. Chapter 1: Scientific method

3 I will be able to define scientific inquiry in my own words.
Learning target I will be able to define scientific inquiry in my own words. Today I am… learning about the history of scientific inquiry. So that I’ll be able to… see why it is important to understanding our world. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can define what scientific inquiry to my battle buddy.

4 If someone doesn’t believe your claim, can you supply evidence?
Science studies the natural world. Scientists propose explanations that can be examined with evidence. Smallest atom to the largest galaxy

5 A guiding question is created through an observation.
Read the history of Bubble gum!

6 Hypothesis/Claim An if-then statement of the expected outcome.
It implies a cause-effect relationship. The claim needs to be a statement that can be proven right or wrong! In this class it is alright to be wrong! Getting it wrong helps us learn how to get it right! Ex: If I decrease the water temperature, then the goldfish will have a slower heartrate.

7 Variables Independent variable: The manipulated variable.
Dependent variable: What changes when the independent variable changes. Control variable: Any factor that would be normal for what you are testing during an experiment. For comparison to test variable

9 Use an experiment to answer your guiding question
The experiment must be able to test your hypothesis/claim. Ex. The experiment must be relevant to the hypothesis/claim. If you are testing bubble gum you will not create an experiment for how fast whales can swim.

Trials How many times an experiment is conducted.

11 Data: Qualitative vs. Quantitative
Observations use your senses to observe the results. Quantitative: Observations are made through measuring.

12 Record and analyze data
Record experimental data, present the data in the form of a chart or graph.

13 Your Conclusion Was your claim correct or incorrect? Why?
You will use your data and observations to justify your answer.

14 Scientific method pg. 4 LS
Draw a picture of a Qualitative and Quantitative observation. Describe what makes it qualitative or quantitative. You cannot use the pictures from the notes.
