8 Why should we care about water?
It covers more than 70% of our planet!!!!!! Why should we care about water?

9 AIM: Where is all the water?
DO NOW: What is the purpose of a shed in your backyard? HW:REGENTS REVIEW # 1 DUE TUESDAY 2/27 WEDGL VOCAB PART 1 DUE FRIDAY 3/2 REGENTS REVIEW # 2 DUE WEDNESDAY 3/7 REGENTS REVIEW TEST # 1 FRIDAY 3/9 LAB # 27: EVAPORATION RATES DUE PD 1 AND 6 –WED 2/28 & PD 4 AND 9 –THUR 3/1

10 The World’s Water Supply
97% of Earth’s water is SALT water 3% is FRESH water

11 2% is confined to ice and glaciers
That only leaves 1% of all the water on Earth available for humans to use!

12 How is Water Recycled? The water cycle - water circulates between the hydrosphere (water) and atmosphere (air)

13 What is the purpose of a shed in your backyard?

14 Water evaporates fastest when there are…
WARM TEMPERATURES FAST WINDS

15 3. HIGH SURFACE AREA 4. DRY AIR (low humidity)

16

17 Design a method by which you could prove that both of these samples hold the same amount of water inbetween their sediments!

18 1. Infer why water will get stuck traveling through column D. 2
1. Infer why water will get stuck traveling through column D. 2. Determine what will happen to the rate of the water as it travels through the other columns.

19

20 Where does the water go when it INFILTRATES the ground?
Infiltration – water seeping into the ground

21 What conditions allow for infiltration of water into ground?
Unsaturated – empty (not already filled with water) Gentle Slope – so water is able to seep in

22 Permeable – ground must have open pore spaces (porosity) to allow water to pass through (pavement or black top are not permeable.)

23 Water will infiltrate when the ground is flat and permeable

24

25 AIM: What is permeability?
DO NOW: 1. Take out regents review #1 and put it in the blue bin on my desk. 2. Take out current events. 3. Period 1 and 6 take out lab #27 4. WHICH SAMPLE WILL ALLOW WATER TO FLOW THROUGH FASTER? HW: LAB # 27: EVAPORATION RATES DUE TOMORROW FOR PD 4 AND 9 READ BACKGROUND OF LAB # 28 (PGS 1-3)

26 What is permeability? WHAT IS THE SAME ABOUT THE TWO SAMPLES?
WHICH SAMPLE WILL ALLOW WATER TO FLOW THROUGH FASTER?

27 What is permeability? The rate at which groundwater will infiltrate the rock and sediments Bigger pore spaces = faster permeability

28 WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WATER CANT PERMEATE INTO THE GROUND FAST ENOUGH?

29

30 Why does the water travel upward through the paper towel?

31 Capillary Action The upward movement of water against gravity

32 Occurs because water is sticky
(positive Hydrogen's and negative Oxygen attract) The smaller the pores, the higher the water rises

33

AIM: FINISH LAB 28 DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT YOUR WEDGL VOCAB PART ONE. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT 2. Take out lab #28 and turn to the data collection page. HW: 1. LAB # 28 DUE MONDAY 2. READ AND COMPLETE NOTES ON LONG ISLANDS WATER(WEBSITE) 3. GROUNDWATER REVIEW DUE TUESDAY

48

49 AIM: What is the water table?
DO NOW: 1. PONDER THIS IF YOU SPILL A LIQUID ON YOUR GRANITE COUNTER DOES IT SOAK IN??????

50 What is the water table? The level of stored water within rock and sediments underneath us. Where the zone of saturation meets the zone of aeration.

51

52

53

54 The Water Table Groundwater flows from areas where the water-table is high, to areas where it’s low.

55 Why do lakes and streams dry up?

56 A lack of condensation will DECREASE the water table
An increase in condensation will INCREASE the water table

57 What determines the changing level of our water table?

58 Porosity – the percentage of pore space
Water is found in the pores between particles of rock.

59 The more pores there are, the more water can be held

60 High Porosity Low Porosity

61 What affects porosity?

62 ROUND DOESN’T FIT CLOSE
1. Shape of Particle ANGULAR FITS CLOSER Low Porosity ROUND DOESN’T FIT CLOSE High Porosity B A

63 2. Packing CLOSER = LESS SPACE FARTHER = MORE SPACE Higher Porosity

64 3. Sorting Well Sorted Unsorted High Porosity Low Porosity A B

65 The total porosity will be equal if they have the same shape and sorting…..regardless of size

66

67 Runoff

68

69 What conditions cause Runoff?
Ground is frozen (not permeable)

70 2. Soil is already fully saturated with water
3. Rainfall exceeds the rate of infiltration

71 4. The slope of the land is steep
5. Vegetation of area has been stripped away

72 AIM: What affects porosity? DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT LAB # 28
2. ANSWER QUESTION HW: GROUNDWATER REVIEW DUE TOMORROW. QUIZ WEDNESDAY FILL IN “LONG ISLANDS WATER” NOTES FROM WEBSITE
