The Jamestown Colony 1605: Virginia Company of London (Joint Stock Co.) petitions King James I to colonize Virginia December 1606: 104 colonists sail to Chesapeake Bay and establish Jamestown in 1607. Colonists had difficulty-poor geography, few skilled workers; after a few months 51 settlers had perished.

Jamestown Colony : “Starving Time”, settlers are struggling to survive. Cap’t. John Smith: “mythical” figure who ran Jamestown like a military officer. He also opened relations (good & bad) with local Native Americans led by Powhatan. John Rolfe introduced tobacco in 1612-provided a economic engine (saved) for Jamestown. (married Pocahontas.)

Plymouth Colony 1620: 2nd permanent settlement established by Pilgrim settlers (Separatists from England). Landed near Cape Cod-created self-government with the Mayflower Compact. Settlers had peaceful & turbulent relations w/ Native Americans.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
: Great Puritan Migration, 14,000-20,000 Anglican Puritans left England for New England and more religious freedom. Puritan culture & ethics have had a large impact on American government & culture.
